Paganini Caprice 15 Practice Vlog (super advanced and a little bit awkward)
February 18, 2015
So I wrote this out and somehow lost it, trying to rehash the next day is NOT the same thing. So I'm going to do my best, but it's not going to be as good. Sorry about that!
had this idea of doing a practice vlog, and I took the paganini 15th caprice, since I need something showy for my shows (since I mainly do covers and pop songs, its good to throw in a little class here and there) and while I was looking through it the first time, I thought I would do a practice vlog, breaking it down for myself out loud, and sharing it with the internet. Hello, useful practice tool!!
So basically I divided it into 4 basic sections and each of them had their own unique area that I needed to work on
Octaves. The octave position is really important in general to maintain good intonation, but here, I practiced sliding around the violin in octave position. Having a heavy/weighted left hand is IMPERATIVE for octaves, but there are several places where Galamian (the violin god) wrote to play with stops of various lengths, so that was something to work on. I also know I need to seperate out the bottom and the top and do a lot of checking, doubling back and playing through thoughtfully
3+1s. Where we have 3 in a down bow and 1 in an up bow. Naturally I think I see people trying to use MORE bow on the up bow, instead of trying to use as little as possible on the three down bows. This is insane in paganini. So think ahead and use tiny bows on the down bow.
Up bow staccato. I haven't done any of this in ages, and basically its like a war with your body since it really requires you ignoring your natural springs. Also, using tiny bows does help with this.
High sections and very low sections: What I think was the most important thing for me with these was that I always make sure that the shift is measured (and that I know approximately where I am shifting to) and always have the hand in place before I play.
I was going to say the first time that I wasn't sure how necessary awtching the videos is, but now that I forgot what I wrote, and am super annoyed by that fact, I suggest watching in order to know what's going on.
